| A little introduction to Thugfucker Recordings... |
I remember, many years ago, going to a big underground club in New York. The place was dark, filled with sweating bodies, all moving in crazy rhythms to the unbelievably loud sounds coming out of the system. The place was pretty fucking amazing and already I was totally blown away by it all.
But then, after a little bit, I walked across the dancefloor and saw, off to the side and seemingly unnoticed, a small window. I went up to it and looked in. On the other side was another whole big room. There were no doors I could see going into it. There were no lights except for one simple light bulb. And inside there was nothing except for two things. The first was a big tree growing out of the floor all the way to the ceiling. The second was a big man in a kilt -- and he was chopping that tree down as if it was his one mission in life and nothing else was going on in the world around him.
What the fuck?!
I stood amazed for at least half an hour, watching him cut it down. It was an incredible, surreal moment.
Then I went back to dancing. And somehow the party was even more incredible because of it.*
This is what nightclubbing is supposed to be. Stylistically, some things may change but always the best parties are the ones filled with a large dose of playful madness and a little touch of anarchy. Where anything can happen, but never without sincerity.
And this is what we try to do with our music. The music we make, the music we DJ and especially now with the label.
We love hearing all kinds of music at a party. Techno, house, disco, deep, minimal, electro, whatever. As long as it's inspired and everyone in the room is having a good time dancing to it.
So don't expect to find all the records sounding alike. We hope they won't. Whether it's a Gary Numan-esque tribute to narcissism1, a jacking hip-house track with a turkish rap on top2, a deep soulful techno track from a classic New York artist3, a sweet Icelandic disco cover of Rage Against the Machine4, a trans-atlantic old school house collaboration in honor of a cross dressing DJ5 or anything else that we're lucky enough to dig up**, we hope to find the stand out tracks that follow the 'anything goes' ethos and bring them to the public. Tracks whose only real goal is contributing to a mad party where everyone is having a good time and anything can happen before the lights come back up..
Some of these songs come from friends of ours, some of them came to us in the most random of ways. Funny stories that last half an hour that we'll be happy to tell you over a drink if we see you at the club.
Some of these come from artists you know already. Established names in the dance music world who have already built strong, solid reputations. Some of them come from people you've never heard of before, from countries you've never been to before, with music scenes that you didn't know existed. We're excited for you to discover them.
But in all of them we hope you'll find something unique. Something that turns you on, freaks you out, moves your ass or whatever else feels good. Just as long as you're having fun.
Because that is DEFINITELY what it is all about.
Hope to see you at the party,
Greg & Holmar (aka Thugfucker)
